The Grand National delivered a shake up to the National Hunt Trainers’ Championship market.
Willie Mullins was still a 7/4 chance to win the National Hunt Trainers’ Championship going into Saturday’s Grand National at Aintree.
However, the £500,000 prize for winner I Am Maximus rocketed him into the lead (now 4/7 on Betfred) ahead of Dan Skelton, now 3/1 to be crowned this year’s king of the jumps having been as short as 9/4 before the weekend.
The big drifter of the weekend was Paul Nicholls, a 5/6 chance on Sky Bet on Saturday morning, who can now be backed at 5/1 on bet365.
Mullins is aiming to become only the second Irishman to win the British Trainers’ Championship after Vincent O’Brien, who won the second of his titles 70 years ago.
His earnings in Britain stand at £2,874,693, with Skelton second with £2,821,886 and Nicholls third with £2,735,106. Nicky Henderson rounds off the top four with £2,024,652.
Mullins could easily run four of five including ante-post favourite Macdermott in search of the £112,540 first prize at the 2024 Scottish Grand National, held this Saturday at Ayr (15:35).
The race for the jumps title finishes at Sandown on 27th April.
