When is the Irish Derby 2024? Curragh Odds, Date, Runners & Betting Tips

The Irish Derby will headline a first-ever nine-race programme at the Curragh.

After conquering the English equivalent at Epsom last month with City Of Troy, trainer Aidan O’Brien has a strong chance of completing the double in the Irish Derby 2024.

Based on the current market for the race through the oddschecker grid, though, the Epsom Derby runner-up heads the betting in his bid to go one better.

Irish Derby Date

The 2024 Irish Derby takes place on Sunday 30th June and will be run at 15.25 at the Curragh. The race is set to be broadcast on television channels ITV and Racing TV.

Irish Derby Runners

Ambiente Friendly

Ambiente Friendly is the warm favourite for Ireland’s highlight, having beat all bar City Of Troy when runner-up in last month’s Classic at the Surrey venue.

Reported to have “come out of that race well” by Rab Havlin, who retains the ride here, James Fanshawe’s progressive youngster remains the one to beat.

If you exclude the winner from last time out, he would have won Epsom’s big race with plenty to spare, as the third-placed Los Angeles was more than three lengths behind him.

The form of his penultimate success at Lingfield was boosted when the second Illinois subsequently landed the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last week.

Westover finished second at Epsom prior to taking this race two years ago, and this son of Gleneagles may well follow suit. He’s a worthy favourite.

Los Angeles

Aidan O’Brien bids to win this prestigious race for a record-extending 16th time, and his main hopeful appears to be Los Angeles.

This son of Camelot was a winner of his first three starts, including the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on his second outing, and posted a really solid effort to finish third in the English Derby last month.

Despite finishing three and three-quarters of a length behind Ambiente Friendly at the line, there was plenty to like about his effort in defeat, faring best of those who were up with the pace.

Based on his pedigree, stamina is very much his forte, and this course should suit him better than last time. He will probably need to find improvement if he's to prevail, but that’s not impossible.

Roger Varian claimed Classic glory with Elmalka in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket last month, and he will be looking to land this weekend’s feature with an interesting runner in the shape of Matsuri.

This son of Sea The Stars displayed plenty of promise as a juvenile, finishing a slightly unlucky short-head second on debut at Salisbury prior to going a place better at Kempton.

Despite only winning by a neck, he would have won a little easier had he encountered a clear passage. However, the step up in trip to 1m2f on his first run as a three-year-old saw him return an easy eight-length winner at Leicester.

Without a doubt, he will need to produce a career-best performance if he’s to play a hand in the finish, but the fact he skipped Epsom and Ascot may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

The initial plan was to go to Epsom, but he didn’t come along in time, and he’s been given plenty of time to develop. His connections rate him highly, and it will be interesting to see how he gets on up against this calibre of opposition.

Irish Derby Betting Tips

Despite still needing to be supplemented, it is difficult to see past the favourite AMBIENTE FRIENDLY

James Fanshawe’s charge had Los Angeles comfortably in behind when second in the Epsom Derby and his previous win at Lingfield also reads well.

He probably deserves more credit than he’s been given and can capture the Irish version under Rab Havlin.
