Coral Gold Cup Winners
The Coral Gold Cup has particular relevance for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
It has been won by nine horses who have also won the blue riband race at the Festival, most recently Native River, who followed 2016 success at Newbury by winning the big one at Cheltenham in 2018. Bobs Worth won the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup just a few months after landing the 2012 edition at Newbury.
Last year's winner at Newbury was Datsalrightgino for Jamie Snowden. 6th in the race was Shakem Up'arry, owned by Harry Redknapp, who went on to win the Plate Handicap Chase at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.
Coral Gold Cup Tips
Steve Ryder's ante-post selection for the Coral Gold Cup last week was the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained six-year-old BROADWAY BOY.
He started off last season in fantastic form with victories at Worcester and both Cheltenham courses before struggling behind Grey Dawning in a Grade 2 Novice Chase at Warwick in January.
He had issues after this which meant he had to miss the Cheltenham Festival and was below par at Aintree but he made a good reappearance at Cheltenham at the October meeting when 3rd behind the reopposing Senior Chief.
Broadway Boy was sent off the 9/4 favourite that day off a mark of 149 but faced pressure for the lead and eventually weakened up the hill to finish 12 ½ lengths behind the winner.
The handicapper has dropped him 1lb for that which seems generous but this galloping track at Newbury and long home straight should really suit his running style.
