Charlie Hall Chase Runners Guide

PROTEKTORAT

Dan Skelton trained ten-year-old who is a three-time Grade 1 winner including the 2022 Betfair Chase on his reappearance. He beat Djelo by 23 lengths at Windsor off level weights in January but failed to defend his Ryanair Chase crown at Cheltenham before finishing 2nd in the Melling Chase on his final start last season. It is a slight concern that he has been beaten 29 lengths and 17½ lengths on his previous two reappearance runs.

PIC D’ORHY

Ten-year-old who has won on his previous four reappearance runs all over fences. He has won 15 of his 34 races in his career but his previous four victories have all been at Ascot where he shows his best. The Paul Nicholls trained gelding only made the racecourse three times last season which resulted in two wins at Ascot before pulling up at Sandown on the final day of the season.

HEWICK

Shark Hanlon trained ten-year-old who won the King George VI Chase in 2023. His two latest wins since have been over hurdles but he has the benefit of race fitness over many of his rivals and will relish the good ground expected on Saturday.

DJELO

Seven-year-old who won twice last season including a 3 ½ length victory in the Grade 2 Denman Chase in February. The Venetia Williams trained gelding was beaten 65 and 37 lengths on his next two starts but he has got form figures of 112 on his reappearance runs with his only defeat coming last season over an inadequate trip of 2m1½f.

THE REAL WHACKER

Last year’s winner who beat Bravemansgame by 3 ½ lengths in the contest which was his first victory since the Brown Advisory Chase at the Cheltenham festival in 2023. The Patrick Neville trained nine-year-old was well beaten on his next three starts last season before finishing 2nd in a Perth handicap hurdle on his reappearance last time off a mark of 146.

GA LAW

Jamie Snowden trained nine-year-old who won the 2022 Paddy Power Gold Cup. Twice a runner-up last season at Chepstow and Cheltenham in handicap company he ended last season with a career equalling best on the figures when 3rd behind Gaelic Warrior in the Oaksey Chase at Sandown when fitted with first time blinkers. Connections revert back to cheekpieces for this race.

Charlie Hall Chase Trainers & Jockeys To Watch

Paul Nicholls has won this race three times recently with Silviniaco Conti (2012), Cyrname (2020) and Bravemansgame (2022) winning this race as well as the latter finishing runner-up in 2023 and 2024.

Harry Cobden has won this race twice recently with Cyrname (2020) and Bravemansgame (2022).

Betting Insights for the Charlie Hall Chase

There hasn’t been a ten-year-old winner of this race since Grey Abbey in 2004 so I am keen to take on Protektorat, Pic D’Orhy and Hewick at the top of the market and preference instead goes to DJELO (best priced at 6/1). The Venetia Williams stable haven’t had many runners so far this season but the seven-year-old has a good reappearance record with form figures of 112. He has twice won in November and was only beaten ¾ length by JPR One in the Haldon Gold Cup last season over an inadequate trip of 2m1½f.

Djelo won two Grade 2 chases last season at Huntingdon and Windsor before slightly disappointing at both Cheltenham and Aintree festivals. A revised rating of 162 for those efforts still puts him up there in the ratings and although he has to concede 6lbs to former Grade 1 winners Protektorat and Hewick, he should run well once again on his reappearance.

Interestingly, The Real Whacker (26%) and Djelo (22%) are the top two most backed this week on Oddschecker for the Charlie Hall Chase, with the favourite Protektorat only picking up 16% of all ante-post bets placed on the platform.

Recommended bet: DJELO 6/1 (0.5pt ew)
