Betfair Chase 2025 Runners Guide
GREY DAWNING
Finished 2nd in this race last season on his reappearance despite looking like the most likely winner jumping the final fence. Weakened after the last on soft ground and will be better suited by faster ground this year. The Dan Skelton trained eight-year-old disappointed in the King George VI Chase but bounced back with winning at Kelso on his next start. He ended last season finishing 2nd behind Gaelic Warrior at Aintree and he looks the one to beat based on trends and his rating of 166.
HAITI COULEURS
Progressive eight-year-old who has been Rebecca Curtis’ only winner so far this season. He won the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival before winning the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on his final start last season. He returned with a victory over hurdles last time and looks worth trying at this Grade 1 level despite his rating of 154.
HANDSTANDS
Ben Pauling trained six-year-old who won a pair of Grade 2 novice chases prior to beating Jango Baie in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown in February. He was badly hampered at Aintree on his next start and ran with credit when 2nd on his reappearance at Carlisle in the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase over an inadequate trip of 2m4f. He should step forward from that effort just like last year.
HITMAN
Paul Nicholls has won this race a record six times so this nine-year-old is automatically respected coming from that stable. His victory in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree on his reappearance was his first win since November 2022 when he won at this track by eleven lengths. It was encouraging to see him win that race having finished runner-up on eleven occasions in his career previously.

MARSH WREN
Stuart Edmunds trained mare who put in a career best performance to win a listed Mares’ Chase at Market Rasen on her reappearance this season. The nine-year-old was awarded an advised rating of 147 following that victory but that means she has over a stone to find on ratings despite receiving 7lbs from her rivals.
ROYALE PAGAILLE
Haydock specialist who has form figures of 112111P6 at this track including victories in this race for the past two seasons. Whether he gets his beloved soft ground this year is a question mark and he needs to prove that he is still the same force of old at the age of eleven as his season somewhat petered out last year.
STELLAR STORY
Gordon Elliott trained eight-year-old who won the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2024 and who made a winning reappearance last season winning a Grade 2 over fences. He outran odds of 22/1 to finish 2nd in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season but ended the season well beaten at Punchestown.

The Dan Skelton stable have had a fantastic season so far targeting valuable contests and this will have been a long-term target for GREY DAWNING (best priced at 11/8). The eight-year-old was a Grade 1 winning novice chaser and looked the most likely winner of this race last season on his reappearance when only beaten two lengths by Royale Pagaille.
Grey Dawning bounced back from a disappointing effort in the King George VI Chase to win at Kelso before finishing 2nd behind Gaelic Warrior in the Grade 1 Aintree Bowl. A rating of 166 should mean he proves too good for his rivals here if tuned up for his reappearance and getting faster ground than last year.
