BOOTHILL
Ten-year-old who finished 2nd behind Jonbon in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novice Chase over this course and distance in 2022. He has failed to complete in four of his previous seven starts (three falls and pulled up last time) and finished behind Jonbon in all three of those other starts.
EDWARDSTONE
Eleven-year-old who won the 2021 Henry VIII Novice Chase and this race in 2022. His only victory since this race in 2022 was in the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase at Newbury in February 2024 but has been beaten nine times since. He finished 4th, beaten 31 lengths behind L’Eau Du Sud and Jonbon in the Shloer Chase on his reappearance.
IL ETAIT TEMPS
Willie Mullins-trained seven-year-old has won six of his eight starts over fences, including an impressive 5 ½ length victory over Jonbon in the Celebration Chase at the end of last season. That was after a 359-day break, and he returned this season with a comfortable 18-length success at Clonmel on his reappearance. With a rating of 169, he sets the standard.
JONBON
Remarkable nine-year-old who has won 18 of his 24 starts under rules, with the other six resulting in runner-up efforts. He has been slightly fortunate to keep that record intact when 15 lengths behind L’Eau Du Sud in the Shloer Chase on his reappearance. But his return to Sandown, where he has won four Grade 1s, will suit him much better. It is intriguing to see him with an entry for the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon on Sunday over the 2m4f trip as well.
L’EAU DU SUD
Progressive seven-year-old who put in a career best performance when beating Jonbon by 15 lengths at Cheltenham in the Shloer Chase on his reappearance. He has won 5 of his 7 starts over fences, including when an impressive 3 ¾ length winner of the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novice Chase on this card a year ago.
LIBBERTY HUNTER
Evan Williams-trained nine-year-old who finished 2nd in the Game Spirit Chase last season, prior to falling when still going well in the Champion Chase last season. He unseated Harry Cobden on his return at Cheltenham in the Shloer Chase and will need a clear round to give him confidence going forward.

Both Il Etait Temps and L’Eau Du Sud hit all six trends highlighted above, and I thought the prices of both were accurate of their chances of success. Jonbon has question marks to answer, having been comprehensively beaten by L’Eau Du Sud in the Shloer Chase on his reappearance, although a return to Sandown, where he has won five of his six starts, could bring about an improved performance from him.
Il Etait Temps beat Jonbon in the Celebration Chase here last season despite returning from a 359-day break, and he returned with a comfortable 18-length success at Clonmel on his reappearance. He would have had an easier race there 30 days prior to this compared to the Shloer Chase that L’Eau Du Sud won 22 days prior at Cheltenham, and that may give him the advantage.
