22 runners will head to York to compete in the Ebor Handicap on Saturday.

The Sky Bet Ebor is the feature handicap of York's Ebor Festival, with a maximum field of 22 runners set to battle over 1m6f. This year's renewal looks wide open, with several well-handicapped contenders bringing strong recent form and plenty of unexposed potential to the table.

Ebor Handicap 2026 Key Runners Guide

Tarriance

Tarriance arrives as one of the leading contenders after shaping very well when fourth behind Hopewell Rock at Goodwood. He travelled strongly before tiring late and should strip fitter for that first run in 78 days. He won the Sky Bet Melrose over this course and distance last year and remains on a mark of 105, so another big run looks possible despite being 12lb higher than for that victory.

Klassleader

Klassleader has plenty of potential and looked particularly impressive when winning at York in May. He came from the rear in a slowly run race, produced an excellent finishing burst and pulled three lengths clear of Sing Us A Song. His fifth-place finish at Royal Ascot from last year's form has since been franked, while his pedigree suggests the step up to 1m6f should suit. His subsequent Old Newton Cup run can be forgiven given the unusually fast ground, and he remains potentially well treated from 98.

Love Me Tender

Love Me Tender is an intriguing recruit for Willie Mullins and arrives with a potentially attractive mark of 96. His fourth at Chantilly might not look spectacular on paper, but the form has worked out extremely well, with several horses around him now rated well into the 100s. He has won both previous starts in Germany and could have plenty more to offer for his new connections. The lack of a prep run is the obvious question, but his profile is highly interesting.

Daiquiri Bay

Daiquiri Bay has enjoyed a productive campaign, beating Gamrai at Newmarket before defeating the same rival again at Royal Ascot. His ability to come from off the pace and sustain a long run makes him an obvious candidate for a strongly-run Ebor. Alan King has deliberately freshened him up for this race since Ascot and any rain would reportedly be in his favour. He has a strong profile, although he will need to defy a mark that has risen following his Ascot success.

Emit

Emit has been knocking on the door in some strong handicaps and could be suited by the return to 1m6f. He finished fourth in the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot, staying on well, before another eye-catching effort at the Curragh. His Ascot form has worked out well, with Opportunity and Hopewell Rock subsequently enhancing the form. The four-year-old looks capable of making his presence felt if the expected strong pace brings his stamina into play.

Paddy The Squire

Paddy The Squire has been specifically aimed at the Ebor and has the consistency required for a competitive handicap of this nature. He was second in the Old Newton Cup before finishing third in the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot, both strong pieces of form. His latest run at Newmarket was another solid effort and the return to 1m6f could unlock further improvement. He may need to find a little more from his mark of 104, but he looks capable of being competitive.

Ascending

Ascending finished second in this race last year behind Ethical Diamond and therefore has proven form at the track and over the trip. He travelled particularly well in last year's renewal and connections appear to have had another long-term plan for him. His two runs this season, however, have been disappointing, and he needs to bounce back considerably. The return to 1m6f and a strongly-run race could help him rediscover his best form.

Mr Hollywood

Mr Hollywood is another Willie Mullins-trained contender with an interesting handicap profile. He was only three lengths behind Illinois in the Ascot Stakes before subsequently winning over hurdles at Galway. He now makes his handicap debut from 2lb lower than Columbus and has plenty of pace alongside his stamina. His ability to cope with the demands of 1m6f should make him interesting, particularly if he can translate his best staying form to the Flat.

Hopewell Rock

Hopewell Rock has emerged as one of the strongest recent form references after winning at Goodwood. His victory came in a competitive handicap in which Tarriance finished fourth, and several horses from the race have strong credentials. He has therefore earned his place among the leading Ebor contenders, although a penalty and his revised mark could make life tougher here.

Stressfree

Stressfree has plenty of experience in this race and finished fourth in last year's renewal. Unfortunately, his recent defeats behind Daiquiri Bay and Hopewell Rock leave him with something to prove. He is now 2lb lower than when fourth last year, which gives him some encouragement, but he needs a significant return to form to feature prominently.

Square Necker

Square Necker is an improving four-year-old who looks ready to take another step forward in the Ebor. He travelled strongly before quickening clear to win over this trip at Ayr in June and has since been freshened up specifically for this target. A £160,000 yearling purchase, he is related to 104-rated Titanium and is bred to progress, so there could still be more to come.

Beylerbeyi

Beylerbeyi has shown useful form this season and was only two lengths away when fourth at Newmarket in July. He had previously run well at Royal Ascot, so his recent form suggests he remains competitive. The key question is whether the 1m6f trip brings out his best, with a shorter distance potentially offering a little more appeal.

Paradias

Paradias is the other half of Alan King's Ebor team and has already secured his place in the field. He finished third in the Listed Coral Marathon at Sandown and has been freshened up since. King believes 1m6f is probably his ideal trip, although he is exposed and has plenty to find from his current handicap mark. Nevertheless, his staying ability gives him a chance of running well.

Opportunity

Opportunity has been mentioned as an important piece of the form, particularly after winning the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot. He finished ahead of Emit and helped establish a strong line of form that has subsequently been boosted by other runners. His position towards the top of the weights means the handicapper gives him less room for error, but his recent form puts him firmly in the conversation.

Klassleader – 8/1

Add to betslip.

looks the most appealing bet in a race where the market may be underestimating just how much upside he still has. His York win in May was more impressive than the bare margin suggested: he came from the rear in a steadily run race, produced the fastest finish and still had enough in reserve to pull three lengths clear. That was only his fifth start and he remains on a mark of 98, while the subsequent Old Newton Cup flop is easy to forgive given the unusually quick ground. Add in his proven York form, stamina for 1m6f and a profile that fits the race's preference for younger horses, and he looks a classic Ebor type – one whose best may still be ahead of him.
