Cambridgeshire Handicap Runners Guide
Gavriel
John and Thady Gosden’s lightly raced three year old heads the market after winning a 1m 1½f Ascot handicap on 5 September. Stall 28 is ideal on recent draw trends and he carries a 6lb penalty. The profile is progressive, but 4/1 leaves little margin in a race that so often beats short favourites.
Hand Of God
Harry Charlton’s five year old sits on a fair mark after a Newbury 1m 2f win in May and a strong second of 22 at York in July. He is a course winner, draws 24 in the high band that has dominated recent renewals, and is available around 9/1 while the favourite is half that price.
Indalo
Roger Varian’s five year old was beaten a nose in last year’s Cambridgeshire, then finished third in the Royal Hunt Cup and won the Coral Challenge at Sandown. Stall 26 is another plus, but he has been off 57 days and recent winners almost never return from that long a break.
Bourbon Blues
Brian Meehan’s three year old won over 1m 2f at Doncaster on 10 September under Ryan Moore after solid placed efforts at Goodwood and York. Connections have Cambridgeshire form through Spark Plug. Stall 13 is lower than ideal if the high side dominates.
Erzindjan
Fourth in last year’s renewal and a course and distance winner of the Suffolk Stakes in May. Stall 25 fits the draw bias, but he is eight and the age trend is harsh on horses of seven and older.
Harmonics
Gosden’s second string was third in a Windsor Group 3 last time. Stall 18 keeps her in the mix at around 10/1 if the market leaders underperform.
Crest of Fire
Jack Channon’s three year old won a Goodwood handicap in August but finished last of seven in a Windsor Group 3 since. Stall 7 is a clear negative on recent Cambridgeshire draw evidence.
Thunder Run
Karl Burke and Clifford Lee chase a third Cambridgeshire in three years. He won at Doncaster latest and stays well, but top weight of 10st leaves him with plenty to do.
Wild Thoughts
Richard Spencer’s progressive three year old was third to Bourbon Blues at Doncaster then won at Ayr on 17 September. Light weight and stall 19 make him a live each way alternative around 12/1.
Pathein
Ed Dunlop and William Buick’s three year old is rated 102 and drawn 15. Consistent enough without a recent win that screams this race.
Shafdar
Ian Williams’s Chester winner carries a 5lb penalty from stall 5. Soft ground form is a caveat if Newmarket stays Good or firmer.
Cambridgeshire Trainer To Watch
Karl Burke and Clifford Lee have won the last two renewals and return with Thunder Run under top weight. John and Thady Gosden supply the favourite in Gavriel and Harmonics as the second string, though the yard has been quiet in this race since 2019. Harry Charlton’s Hand Of God looks the best drawn of the market principals.
Cambridgeshire Handicap Betting Tips
Good ground after watering should play fair, with dry weather forecast for Saturday. High draws remain the key positional angle: Hand Of God (24), Indalo (26), Erzindjan (25) and Gavriel (28) all sit in the favoured band.
Gavriel is the right type on raw potential, but 4/1 is the wrong price in a handicap that routinely pays mid double figures and punishes favourites. Indalo’s draw and form appeal are real, yet 57 days off is a hard pass against the trends. Bourbon Blues and Wild Thoughts are solid each way backups if you want a second ticket.
The bet is Hand Of God. He has the draw, the big field York form, a 1m 2f win already on the card, and course experience, all at around 9/1 while the favourite is half the price. Take the win, and go each way if your book pays five or more places.
Recommended Bet: Hand Of God 12/1 (1pt each way)
