The former stand-up comedian is a long-shot to takeover, but that hasn’t stopped the punters.
English comedian Eddie Izzard is proving popular, in the race to become the next Mayor of London.
Christine Shawcroft stepped down from her position on Labour’s National Executive Committee following the anti-Semitism row earlier this year.
She was replaced by Izzard, who she had previously defeated for a seat on the NEC in January.
Izzard takes his place on the board after two unsuccessful attempts, with the marathon-runner coming fourth behind three successful candidates.
The comedian has been a life-long Labour supporter, and has stated on numerous occasions his ambitions to run to for London Mayor in 2020.
Back in 2012, Ed Miliband revealed that Izzard would be his top choice for London Mayor.
Even the British public are now beginning to take Izzard’s claims a little more serious, over the weekend he accounted for 60% of bets in the market.
Despite having the backing from the punters, the 56 year-old still remains a 50/1 shot with the bookies.
The same bookies are giving Izzard the same chance of taking over from Sadiq Khan as Shaun Bailey, Zac Goldsmith, Charlie Mullins and James Cleverly.
The current London Mayor has been come in for some criticism of late, but still remains as short as 1/3 to win the 2020 election.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek said: “In this unstable time for UK Politics there is little doubt that voters will be looking to someone who can inspire confidence.
“Izzard is immensely popular for both his comedic and his philanthropist work, and should his name ever appear on a ballot paper you can be sure he would attract support from the British public.“
