Bookies are taking no chances on May being ousted before December 31st
Bookmakers have slashed odds on Theresa May leaving office by the end of 2018, now implying a 50% chance that she leaves this year.
Reports of cabinet discontent have resulted in a flurry of bets on Theresa May’s exit date market, with 82% of bets in the last 24 hours going on 2018 being the year.
2018 as the year for the Prime Minister to exit her post has come in from 6/1 to 4/5 with the bookies.
The movements in the market come largely in light of reports that Theresa May faces a revolt from senior cabinet ministers in response to the draft Brexit agreement pitched to them on Wednesday afternoon.
Dissatisfying Brexiteers within her cabinet with a deal that is rumoured to appease the European Union on key issues, the potential backlash could severely damage the Prime Minister’s authority at what is already an extremely testing time.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek said: “Parliament is in chaos and Dominic Raab's resignation has left Teresa May in a perilous position.
“Although the idea of her being ousted this year was almost unthinkable just 48 hours ago, but it's fast becoming the likely outcome.
“The shift in odds equates to a leap from a 14% to a 50% chance of May leaving in 2018, making the outcome twice as likely according to bookies.”
