Theresa May now more likely to leave before the majority of her cabinet

Prime Minister still feeling the heat as she scrambles for Brexit deal support.

The backlash to the proposed withdrawal agreement continues to heap pressure on Theresa May, leaving her right near the top of the ‘Next Cabinet Minister to Leave’ market. Bookies price her at 4/1, the second favourite to go ahead of most of her cabinet ministers.

Amidst letters of no confidence from within her party and calls from critics that she should step down, the Prime Minister retorted that removing her would not make delivery Brexit any easier.

Negotiations are expected to carry on this week ahead of the Brexit summit between EU leaders and the PM next Sunday, but only once progress has been made on the political declaration.

Penny Mordaunt remains favourite to leave her post as a cabinet minister at 5/2. The Secretary of State for International Development was heavily tipped to leave in response to the draft agreement presented last week but did not immediately follow the path of colleagues Dominic Raab and Esther McVey.

The staunch Brexiteer is still seen as volatile, with the current trajectory of Brexit far from satisfying her position. The likes of Andrea Leadsom (7/1), David Mundell (7/1) and Michael Gove (8/1) follow closely behind.

Activity in the market is likely to rage on as disaffected members of May’s cabinet distance themselves from a Brexit plan that does not align with the party’s promises, many of whom are being touted to be the likely candidates in the event of a leadership challenge.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “May has shown that she is not one to jump ship when the going gets tough, but the decision may well not be down to her should enough letters of no confidence be sent in the coming days. Whilst her position may not seem quite as precarious now as it did before the weekend, the betting suggests that May is not out of the woods yet.”
