Who leads the running to be the next Tory leader?

We take a look at some of the candidates to be next Conservative Party leader should May lose.

With Theresa May facing a vote of no confidence this evening, big names in the Tory party are jostling for the Conservative Party leadership.

Should the Prime Minister lose the vote, the party will have to select a new leader who will then have to ask to form a government and become prime minister.

Here are some of the contenders to take over…

BORIS JOHNSON – 9/2 best price

The former foreign secretary is the current favourite to take over as Tory leader, having spearheaded the leave campaign.

A divisive figure that is never far from the spotlight, Johnson has accrued 18% of bets on the market in the last 24 hours.

DOMINIC RAAB – 6/1 best price

Having recently exited his post as Brexit secretary, many see Dominic Raab as the most likely candidate to replace May. His resignation caused shockwaves throughout cabinet as he led an exodus surrounding the shortfalls of the divorce agreement proposed by the PM.

Having attracted the highest percentage of bets in the last 24 hours, with 21%, he is the punters’ choice.

SAJID JAVID – 6/1 best price

Currently the Home Secretary, Javid is one of the front-runners to take over. His popularity within the party has grown since taking a key role in May’s cabinet.

He’s accrued 15% of bets on the market in the last 24 hours, leaving him as third favourite with punters too.

JACOB REES-MOGG – 16/1 best price

Staunch Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has perhaps been the most vocal figure in opposition to Theresa May lately. His highly publicised letter of no confidence helped trigger a rebellion against the PM.

With 8% of bets in the last 24 hours, he’s not far behind the market leaders as far as punters are concerned.

AMBER RUDD – 18/1 best price

Despite expressing her full support for the PM on Twitter this morning, the Work and Pensions Secretary has been a key figure in the party for a number of years and could be backed by plenty of MPs as a strong leadership choice.

Attracting just 5% of bets on the market, punters think her loyalties will continue to lie with Theresa May.
