BREXIT PANIC: What do bookies predict the government would ration first?

Motorists could be the first to feel the pinch with fuel favourite to be restricted.

Paddy Power have priced up the possible implications of a no-deal Brexit for the UK, with odds of 12/1 on food rationing being officially announced in 2019.

After Tory minister Mel Stride was photographed leaving a planning meeting with notes stating “no food” and “no channel tunnel”, the no-deal scenario scaremongering has well and truly got under way.

With the high likelihood of the UK leaving the EU without a deal following the result of Tuesday’s meaningful vote, the bookmaker has broken down the probability of various commodities facing restrictions this year.

Heavily reliant on imports from far and wide, fuel tops Paddy Power’s list at 7/1. If it isn’t queues at the petrol stations, Paddy Power reckon it will be the supermarket trolley dash instead. Milk (11/1), bread (16/1) and olive oil (16/1) make up the next items to be rationed first.

Horrifyingly for many Brits that enjoy a tipple, wine (33/1) and gin (50/1) are listed as long shots to be capped.

Amidst warnings of supply channels being affected by a no-deal Brexit, the government have jumped to dismiss any rumours of shortages should the UK leave Europe without assurances on trade and border controls.

These markets are released as news comes of panicked members of the public buying Brexit survival kits. The so-called ‘Brexit Box’ contains freeze-dried food items, fire starting gel and a water filter.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “The concept of rationing is something most UK residents are lucky enough to have only read about in history lessons, but the past may well become the present if a favourable Brexit deal isn't reached in the coming weeks.

“Maybe Jacob Rees-Mogg would change his stance if he found out the he won't be able to dip his Focaccia into some Extra Virgin Olive Oil as he pleases should the country continue down this path.”
