After a landmark Commons defeat, the PM’s days are numbered.
Having suffered a humiliating defeat in the House of Commons yesterday, odds on Theresa May ceasing to be Prime Minister before the end of the month have been halved.
Priced at 4/1 before the result of the Brexit vote was announced, the odds have promptly been slashed to just 2/1, making that the most likely date in the market. 2020 or later follows at 3/1, while a February exit for May is priced at 5/1.
Visibly shaken as the result was delivered, her deal slammed by 432 MPs, the Prime Minister invited opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to call a no confidence vote against her government.
Theresa May has battled through high-profile resignations, a confidence vote against her leadership from within the Conservative Party and now faces yet another challenge from parliament.
Having spent the past months weathering a storm which seems destined to topple her eventually, bookies think it’s increasingly likely the Prime Minister’s departure is imminent.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “It seems only a matter of time before Theresa May steps down from her position as Prime Minister in light of the latest Brexit disaster.
“Picking herself up after an unprecedented failure in the Commons, it’s no surprise to see the bookies writing May off. At 2/1, they’re implying a 33.3% chance she leaves by the end of the month.”
