The Environment Secretary stamped down his authority in the House of Commons last night.
Bookies have cut odds on Michael Gove becoming the next Prime Minister in half following his fiery closing speech in the House of Commons last night. Priced at 12/1 yesterday, he’s now the 6/1 second favourite behind Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn (9/2).
After Theresa May’s government narrowly survived the confidence vote last night, an impassioned Michael Gove closed the debate with a scathing attack on the opposition’s Brexit stance.
Corbyn remains the punter’s choice at this stage. He’s accrued 31% of bets in the last 24 hours, compared to just 17% on Michael Gove.
At a time where the government appear meek and chaotic, Gove’s authoritative speech has been well received by plenty despite his unpopularity in the past.
Having highlighted the shortfalls of Jeremy Corbyn and his party, bookmakers have responded by installing him as second favourite to take over from Theresa May as PM.
That’s seen him leapfrog Boris Johnson (7/1) in the running and subsequently also in the next Conservative leader market too, with Gove now as short as 9/2 to be the new Tory leader.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “The public's perception of Michael Gove has done a huge U-turn since his infamous moves in the previous Tory leadership race.
“What that does tell us is that the keys to No.10 certainly appeal and more speeches like yesterday would surely see him as the front-runner to get them.”
