Bookmakers have slashed odds on the contentious Tory finally swooping into No. 10.
Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson leads the running to be the next Prime Minister following the resignation of Theresa May, priced as short as 5/4 by bookmakers.
May addressed the country from Downing Street in an emotional farewell speech, in which she announced she would step down as leader of the Conservative Party on Friday 7th June.
Boris Johnson has topped the market for some time but since yesterday his price has shortened from 2/1 into close to the even money mark. He’s clearly the punters’ choice too, with 47% of bets on the market today going his way.
Meanwhile, former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab is second in the market at 6/1, the second most backed with just 8% of bets.
Cabinet ministers Michael Gove (14/1) and Jeremy Hunt (14/1) follow, while recently resigned Andrea Leadsom is the first female candidate to appear in the bookies’ list at 16/1.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “It may be a case of 'be careful what you wish for' for those Remainers who are cheering May's exit given who is at the top of the market. Boris Johnson played a key role in the initial referendum when campaigning for Leave and will surely make the prospect of a no deal Brexit all the more likely.”
