Farage is now priced at 9/1 to be in No. 10 by the end of this year.
Bookmakers had Nigel Farage at 125/1 to become Prime Minister in 2019 back in February. The Brexit Party leader, now an MEP, is priced at 9/1 in that market after topping a recent opinion poll.
Of course, as the next Prime Minister is very likely to be one of those bidding for the Tory leadership, the 55-year-old is still an outsider in that particular market at 66/1.
However, with a snap general election expected to be on the cards following Theresa May’s departure, bookies reckon it’s more likely than ever that the Brexit Party and their chief gain power in 2019.
Popularity for the mainstream parties has waned throughout the shambolic Brexit process, while the right-wing has continued to gather strength.
This rise was epitomised by the recent runaway success of the Brexit Party in last month’s European Parliament elections, winning with 30% of the vote.
Since its launch in April, Farage and his party have been marching up the markets. The Brexit Party are now as short as 4/1 to gain the most seats in the next general eletion while Farage is priced at 5/2 to become an MP this year.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “Popularity in opinion polls and success in the European elections shows there is plenty of support for the Brexit Party, but winning a general election is a completely different ball game.
“When you consider the hundreds of constituencies a new party would need to win over, 9/1 on Farage gaining power in 2019 looks extremely short. He'd be a popular choice with the UK's visitor from stateside though."
