Odds crash resulting in '85.7% chance of General Election' this year

Every bookie offering a price is now heavily odds-on

British bookmakers have unanimously slashed odds on a General Election taking place in 2019, with some firms going as short as 1/6 that it takes place this year.

In layman’s terms, that’s the equivalent of an 85.7% chance that said General Election takes place this year, with money continuing to pour in.

Just earlier today, Oddschecker’s grids showed 1/3 for 2019 to be the date chosen. However, following a stream of bets, that price is no longer.

In total, 8-out-of-10 of all bets placed in the market over the last 24 hours have backed 2019 to be the chosen year, dwarfing the rest of the market.

Elsewhere, 2020 is the second most likely year for the next General Election at 4/1, followed by 2022 (33/1) and 2021 (50/1).

In terms of who would hold the most seats following the next General Election, the Conservatives are heavy favourites at 2/5, followed by Labour (4/1), The Brexit Party (20/1) and the Liberal Democrats (28/1).

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “Boris Johnson’s coup has sent shockwaves across the country since its announcement, and those shockwaves have translated into political betting money.

“A betting flurry has taken place today on a General Election taking place before the end of the year, and it seems almost inevitable that we’ll see one, according to the heavily odds-on prices.”
