Following the UK Supreme Court's ruling, bookies have cut odds on Boris Johnson leaving his post.
After the UK’s highest court ruled Boris Johnson’s suspension of Parliament as unlawful, bookmakers have slashed odds on him leaving office this year.
Following the news, 2019 as Mr Johnson’s exit date was promptly cut from 6/4 into 10/11. At the beginning of September that price was as long as 7/2.
Converted to percentages, that means bookies are implying a shift from a 22.2% to a 52% probability the Prime Minister leaves No.10 by the end of 2019.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called for Mr Johnson to resign, inviting him to “become the shortest-serving prime minister there has ever been”. Bookmakers currently have that outcome priced at 5/6.
Elsewhere, there has been movement in the ‘month of next election’ market. October 2019 is now as short as 20/1 with some bookmakers. December 2019 still tops the market at a best price of 6/4.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “BoJo has lost his mojo, and the bookies are becoming increasingly confident the beleaguered PM will be out-of-office before 2019 is out.
“Thursday’s damning Supreme Court ruling dealt a major blow to Boris’ security in the hot seat. In the next Prime Minister market, Ken Clarke has shortened from 12/1 into 6/1 already.”
