Odds are gradually shortening towards a 2020 general election.
Odds of when the next general election will take place are shortening towards 2020, with UK punters' confidence in a 2019 election waining.
A 2020 election was as long as 12/1 just last month (05/09/19), although bookies have cut that price all the way into 6/5.
That’s due to a high number of bets on 2020 being the year the country goes to the polls, with 38% of all bets over the last seven days backing next year.
Despite still being the marginal favourite, money is cooling off from punters on a general election taking place this year.
2019 was as short as 1/8 last month (05/09/19), although has drifted out to 10/11, meaning it’s still the most likely scenario – just.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “Boris Johnson has twice challenged MPs to call for an early election and twice been rejected. With a five-week window necessary before the public can take to the polls once an election is called, time is simply running out in 2019.
"It's a crucial week for Mr Johnson as he looks to get a final decision on Brexit ahead of Saturday's special sitting of Parliament. The reaction to that from his rivals is likely to have an impact on this market either way."
