Odds on Tory majority at general election shorten significantly following Nigel Farage comments

There's now a 63.6% implied chance of a Conservative majority after December 12th.

British bookmakers have slashed odds on the outcome of the December general election being a Tory majority, following Nigel Farage comments this afternoon.

The Brexit Party’s announcement that they will not stand in the 317 seats won by the Conservatives in the 2017 election has seen odds on a Tory majority cut from 1/1 into 4/7.

In layman’s terms, that’s an increase from a 50% chance to a 63.6% likelihood of the Tories holding a majority after the nation goes to the polls.

That means that ‘no overall majority’ has drifted out to 15/8, with a Labour majority massively shifting from 16/1 out to 40/1.

In terms of most seats won, the Tory party are also shortening significantly. Some bookmakers have gone as short as 1/33 that the Conservatives take it – implying a 97.1% of winning.

Most other bookmakers on the Oddschecker grids are offering 1/16 on the Tories winning the most seats, the equivalent of a 94.1% chance.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “While this move from the Brexit Party will surely see the Tories hold onto plenty of marginal seats, this impromptu alliance might not help the cause when it comes to battling for new ones."

"With pacts forming between parties on the other side of the Brexit argument too, this remain vs leave theme will be the key to next month's result and the bookmakers are already preparing for that."
