There’s nothing to separate the DUP and Sinn Fein in Belfast North.
With the general election very much on the horizon - battle lines have been drawn and in most constituencies – there’s a comfortable favourite.
However, as of this afternoon (09/12/2019), there are two constituencies in the country that cannot be separated by bookmakers.
In one key seat, the Labour Party and Conservatives are toughing it out, and in the other Sinn Fein and the DUP are battling for favouritism.
Belfast North
One of the key battlegrounds that could determine the outcome of the election, Belfast North is currently as tight as they come.
Both the DUP and Sinn Fein are priced at 10/11 to secure the seat, with a two-horse race almost certainly on the cards.
In layman’s terms, bookmakers are predicting a 52.4% implied probability for both parties to run out winners.
Back in 2017, the DUP and Nigel Dodds emerged victoriously, attracting 21,240 votes out of the 45,949 voters who turned out.
Sinn Fein, with John Finucane at the helm, managed to accrue 19,159 votes, losing by a majority of 2,081.
The next most likely party in Belfast North, Alliance, only managed to scrape together 2,475 votes, and have been priced at 50/1 to win the seat in 2019.
Hyndburn
Located in the heart of Lancashire, Hyndburn is the other current constituency that bookies are struggling to separate between the favourites.
Back in 2017, Hyndburn was retained by the Labour party with 24,120 votes, 5,815 more than the 18,305 the Tories managed in the same election.
However, currently, the bookies are predicting a far closer affair, with both of Britain’s main parties priced up at 10/11 to win the seat.
Much similar to the Belfast North market, bookies are predicting a 52.4% chance for either party to win the seat.
With the seat currently looking set for a two-horse race, the next most likely party, the Brexit Party, are priced at 100/1 to steal the seat from Labour.
The Liberal Democrats are a whopping 125/1 to oust Graham Jones and the Labour party, followed by the Green Party – who are 500/1 to win the seat.
