Next Labour leader odds: Keir Starmer races back into 13/8 favourite

The Shadow Brexit Secretary had drifted out to 8/1 until yesterday.

Sir Keir Starmer has had his odds slashed back into 13/8 to be the next leader of the Labour Party, from 8/1 since yesterday.

Having been favourite in the days following Labour’s heavy defeat in the general election, the Shadow Brexit Secretary had since drifted in the market.

Rebecca Long-Bailey took his place as the clear favourite, shortening as far as odds-on, but she’s now back out to 9/4 and second in the market.

Elsewhere, Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Lisa Nandy has shortened from 6/1 into 3/1 over the past few days.

While Sir Keir is yet to formally announce his candidacy, he told the media yesterday he was “seriously considering” entering the leadership race.

Since then, he’s the most backed in the market, with 31% of bets in the last 24 hours going his way. Long-Bailey has received 22% in that same period.

In what is likely to be a tussle both over Brexit, and fundamentally the identity of the party, Keir Starmer is seen by many as having broad appeal.

While his stance on Brexit is criticised by much of the party membership and he may not appeal to Corbynites, he has also alluded to the fact he would not want to bring Labour’s approach too far rightwards should he become leader.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “It’s clear the Labour Party needs a fresh start after a crushing defeat in the general election, and plenty believe a return to a more centrist approach to be the key to regaining ground on the Conservatives.

Sir Keir Starmer seems the obvious candidate to lead that change of course on paper, but the likes of Rebecca Long-Bailey are still strong contenders for maintaining Corbynite continuity.”
