Eight Republican candidates spoke in front of the American public to outline their credentials to become the next President of the United States in 2024.
It may be the first, but the importance of this first Republican debate cannot be understated. It was an opportunity to show not only the public, but the donors, that they are the best in their party.
Outwitting, outtalking and outperforming the other candidates is the key to debate success. As with every electoral twist and turn, there are winners and there are losers. It is the winners who will decide the market, and fate of the upcoming presidential election.
But, who triumphed last night and who buckled under the pressure?

Republican Presidential Candidates 2024 Odds
There was, of course, no Donald Trump (2/5 favourite) to consider in the debate with his ongoing legal issues preventing him from participating. The man who looked to take him all the way in the early polls, Ron DeSantis, flailed under the pressure. But, given his strong polling prior to the debate, he still comes in at 9/1 to be the next Republican Presidential Candidate.
He was outshone by Vivek Ramaswamy, whose outlandish Trump-like policy proposals, quick wit and fighting talk saw him dominate proceedings. He stands at 7/1 for the Republican nomination in 2024.
In the chasing pack, former Vice-President, Mike Pence, was not just there to make up the numbers. His debate experience gave him a strong platform against other nominees, but his affiliation to Trump may well be his undoing - he also has to battle against his ex-boss when he comes back into the fold. He comes in at a long shot for the nomination at 100/1.
Just in front of Pence is Nikki Haley who performance has garnered praise for criticising Trump and heartily defending her own positions on Ukraine. She is another outside bet at 40/1.

Who is favourite to be next US President?
Current President Joe Biden is the clear and obvious front runner at 7/4, and will take some stopping to secure a second successive term in the White House.
Despite his non-participation, Trump is still having an effect from afar. He is odds-on to be the next Republican nominee at 2/5 and is just behind Biden at 5/2 to take the top job.
However, it is Vivek Ramaswamy who walks away from last night’s debate with the biggest victory - his odds have dropped from 12/1 to 10/1 in the race to be the next President of the United States. Could he grab an unthinkable victory?
