I'm a Celebrity 2016: Do the odds reflect popularity?

We take a look at the odds of each contestant versus their popularity on social media to try and uncover some value in the market.

Not long now until Ant and Dec take to our screens for just less than three weeks of fun down under. The 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here' line-up was announced earlier in the week, and the bookies were quick to price up the ten contestants. However, here at Oddschecker we think they may have missed a trick or two…

The one thing that stands out to us when looking at the results from last year is that the final three had by far the strongest social media presence. It’s hardly surprising that the celebrities the voting public have a stronger connection with in day to day life came out on top, is it?

For some reason, the bookies have chosen to largely ignore that trend this time round. Yes, Gogglebox's Scarlett Moffatt is the 9/4 current favourite and has the biggest following on Twitter (368k). But Carol Vorderman has the second highest following (353k) and yet is available to back at a very appealing 12/1 – she may also have the biggest appeal to the section of the audience not active on social media.

The other one to keep an eye on is Ola Jordan. The Strictly Come Dancing star has the third highest following (260k) but is a big outsider at 22/1.

On the flip side, Team GB heroin Sam Quek looks to be priced up too short to us. The Rio 2016 gold-medallist is currently second favourite at just 8/1, yet not many people would recognise the name, let alone the face. Yes, this might well have its benefits, but to build a big enough following to topple reality TV star Moffatt, or household name Vorderman in such a short space of time? Not for us.
