Golden Globes goes crazy for La La Land causing odds to shorten for the Hollywood Musical to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
Damien Chazelle’s La La Land was the big winner at last night’s Golden Globes, taking home every award it was nominated for including best film score, Best Screen Play, Best Film, Best Original Song, Best Film Director, Best Actress (comedy/musical) and Best Actor (comedy/musical).
There’s no voting overlap between the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards as the Golden Globes are chosen by 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association whereas the Academy Awards are decided by around 7,000 current and former members of the film industry itself. Even so, the bookmakers are convinced it'll be another successful night for La La Land.
Last night’s reaction to La La Land has had a real impact on the odds ahead of the Academy awards at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday February 26. The film has come in from 1/2 yesterday to as short as 1/5 to win Best Picture, Moonlight remains second favourite at 5/1 having picked up Best Motion Picture (Drama) last night.
Damien Chazelle was already 2/7 to win Best Director before winning a Golden Globe last night, he’s now as short as 1/5 to take home the award at the Oscar. Ryan Gosling has moved from 14/1 to 7/1 overnight for Best Actor but still remains third favourite for the award, behind Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington. Casey Affleck beat Denzel Washington to win Best actor (drama) at the Golden Globes last night, which cut his odds from evens to 3/10 overnight for an Oscar.
Unlike Gosling, Emma Stone is favourite for Best actress for her role as Mia in La La Land, she shortened from 5/4 to 6/5 overnight following her award. She faces stiff competition from Natalie Portman (11/8) and Isabelle Huppert (4/1), the latter won Best Actress (drama) yesterday.
The new Hollywood musical featuring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone will be released in the UK January 13th.
