England’s dominant performance at Headingley has sparked a surge of bets from oddschecker punters.
Eoin Morgan’s men were emphatic winners at Headingly on Wednesday, bowling out South Africa for 267 to complete a 72 run victory. The ODI was the first of three warm-up matches ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy which gets underway on June 1st when hosts England face Bangladesh,.
The comfortable win has had punters rushing in to back the home nation, helping to cut England’s odds of winning the competition from 3/1 to as short as 12/5. 66% of bets placed since Wednesday’s win have been on England winning the competition. Intriguingly, after yesterday, South Africa have been the second most popular punt with 15% of bets.

As well as England being backed for glory, yesterday’s star performer Eoin Morgan’s also been popular with bettors. The Irishman remains 33/1 to be top batsman in the competition, but even with those huge odds, he’s accounted for just over 50% of stakes placed in the market today. South-African, Faf du Plessis also impressed with the bat yesterday in Leeds, and is also 33/1 to top-score at the upcoming tournament.
One bookmaker has also slashed England’s Chris Woakes’ odds to be crowned top bowler in the Champions Trophy from 20/1 to 16/1 after his four-wicket haul. However, the favourite selection with Oddschecker users has been South African spinner Imran Tahir.
If the most popular choice with bettors was correct then England would win the competition, India’s Ajinkya Rahane would be top batsman at 50/1 and Tahir top bowler at 12/1.
