New England Patriots out of favour with bettors after opening-game defeat

Shock home-loss to the Chiefs has seen Superbowl LII money for the Patriots reduced to just 7%.

It was supposed to be a celebratory evening for the New England Patriots on NFL kickoff weekend. Showing off the Vince Lombardi Trophy and Tom Brady’s fifth ring, with the small matter of taking care of an average Kansas City Chiefs team in the middle of it all. Instead, the Chiefs blitzed the Pats’ D-line, racking up 42 points in the process. The result sent shockwaves through the league and punters have been quick to react, deserting Brady’s bunch.

Before the season started the Patriots received a quarter of all Superbowl bets. But since the end of Monday night football only 7% of money has been staked on them, an 18% drop. The team to take their place has been the impressive Green Bay Packers. After beating Seattle in a physical low-scoring game, optimism has been high around Lambeau Field. And this has been reflected in the betting with more money going on the Packers than any other team, including multiple double-figure punts.

The other team to catch the bettors’ eye has been the Oakland Raiders. The men in black have continued last season’s form with the returning Derek Carr and ghosted past the Tennessee Titans on the opening weekend. They’ve received 15% of all Superbowl bets and the team are itching to bring a title to the area of Oakland before they depart for Las Vegas at the end of the decade.

The Patriots are still favourite to win it all at 9/2, whilst the Packers and Raiders have both had their odds slightly cut and are now 19/2 and 33/2 respectively.

Oddschecker Spokesman George Elek: “Bill Belichick and co had a rude awakening last Thursday and their quest to win back-to-back Superbowls may be tougher than first imagined. But punters would be wise to remember that this team are well-versed at pulling off comebacks: Just ask the Atlanta Falcons!”
