Geraint Thomas' odds for SPOTY slashed after stunning Tour De France win

The Welshman became the third Brit to win Cycling's ultimate race on Sunday afternoon.

It was thought to be a dream that would remain just that: While Britain was always a cycling mad nation, it would surely be a stretch to ever dream of a man from these shores donning the yellow journey in front of the Champs-Elysees.

But whether you like or loathe Team Sky, the powerhouse of an organisation have backed three winners of cycling’s biggest race, with Geraint Thomas on Sunday joining Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome in the history books.

The Welshman has been backed by a voracious support back in his home country and it could be this support that sees another huge reward land in the 32-year-olds lap.

Although Harry Kane is odds-on favourite to pick up this year’s Sports Personality of the Year award, Thomas’ odds have been slashed over a ten-day period, in accordance with his likeliness to win the Tour De France.

A 20/1 shot in the middle of last week, this price has given away to 9/4 in places, placing him as a firm second-favourite.

However, a best price of 3/1 is available, as Thomas looks to emulate Wiggins and become winner of the BBC event.

The aforementioned Kane is the hot market leader but can still be found at 6/5 best price, with the England striker and Golden Boot winner helping the Three Lions to a best World Cup finish since 1990.

Oddschecker Spokesman George Elek: “What an achievement for Geraint Thomas, who becomes the first Welshman ever to win the Tour De France. It’s meant that his odds for SPOTY have come right in and the Welsh public could make a mockery of his 3/1 odds (20/1 last week) and see him complete a memorable double.”
