Tyson Fury now third-favourite for Sports Personality of the Year

The public opinion of Fury may be shifting and bookies have slashed his odds for this month’s gong.

Tyson Fury has gone from 16/1 into 4/1 third-favourite in places for the 2018 Sports Personality of the year, after drawing with Deontay Wilder in a hugely controversial fight in Los Angeles.

Many thought Fury had done enough to win, but two judges had the fight going either way, with the third unable to separate the duo.

Fury has been the centre of attention all week, with his usual showmanship antics, as well as talking candidly about the various personal issues that caused him to gain 10 stone in the three years between fighting Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 and Sefer Seferi this year.

Despite not capturing the WBC heavyweight crown, bookies have slashed his odds on winning SPOTY across the board, with 11/1 the best price available.

That’s no doubt occurred due to the huge support the Gypsy King is currently experiencing, with 85% of all bets in the last 24 hours going on Fury.

Geraint Thomas remains the 15/8 favourite for SPOTY after becoming the first Welshmen to win the Tour De France this July.

World Cup Golden Boot winner Harry Kane is 9/4, with five-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton 9/2.

Oddschecker spokesman George Elek: “Tyson Fury was nominated for SPOTY in 2015 and it was a controversial choice at the time. He may have his detractors, but his performance against Deontay Wilder has softened a lot of stances and he’s now fully in the mix for the prestigious award.”
