The disruptions look set to continue into late summer…
According to the odds, it’s looking increasingly likely that the Olympics’ opening ceremony will NOT take place in Tokyo on 27 July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The International Olympic Committee will meet via teleconference on Tuesday 17 March to discuss the impact of coronavirus on the summer games, but with odds now suggesting a 75% chance of the ceremony not going ahead, the signs aren’t good.
The virus has already ravaged most major football leagues across the world, while Euro 2020 is also in serious doubt.
While the Tokyo Olympics come a little later in the year, it’s still highly unlikely the outbreak will have subsided enough to ensure the event can go ahead safely.
As of yet, it’s unclear what the alternative to cancellation is. Euro 2020 could well be postponed until next year, but whether or not the Olympics has that capability remains to be seen.
All will be revealed after Tuesday’s meeting.
