A hero to the nation, Captain Tom Moore has had his odds slashed on emulating the likes of Sir Andy Murray and Sir Chris Hoy, and winning the Sports Personality of the Year award.

Captain Moore’s odds have been cut in half over the last 24 hours, with the war veteran going from 100/1 into 50/1 in the betting.

That’s due to a high increase of bets on the West Yorkshire man, with a whopping 52% of all bets in the last 24 hours backing Captain Moore.

Moore completed 100 laps of his front garden yesterday and raised 880,000 donations, totalling £18m in fundraising.

That’s ahead of some huge names in the world of sport, with the current favourite for the award being lineal Heavyweight boxing champion, Tyson Fury (5/4).

Get-fit superstar Joe Wicks is the joint-second favourite in the market at 10/1, alongside Lewis Hamilton at the same price.

Another person whose response to the Coronavirus epidemic has been praised is Jordan Henderson, currently the 12/1 fourth favourite in the market.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “After raising such an enormous sum of money, Captain Tom is nothing short of a national inspiration.

“Tyson Fury is the only recognised sportsman to have achieved something major in 2020, but the incredible work Captain Tom and Joe Wicks have done over the last few weeks rightly puts them in the SPOTY conversation.”

Tyson Fury – 5/4
Joe Wicks – 10/1
Lewis Hamilton – 10/1
Jordan Henderson – 12/1
Anthony Joshua – 22/1
Captain Tom Moore – 50/1
