We look at the latest England Rugby World Cup odds as Steve Borthwick’s side prepare for their tournament opener against Argentina.
After becoming the youngest ever side to make a Rugby World Cup final in 2019, the world appeared to be at England’s feet.
With a young core of world class players, many expected Eddie Jones’ side to be one of the favourites heading to France in 2023. But since that night in Yokohama things haven’t gone at all to plan.
Jones was dismissed in December after a poor Autumn Nations Series and replaced by his former assistant Steve Borthwick. But a disastrous Six Nations followed by three defeats in four World Cup warm up matches have many fearing for England make the knock-out stages, let alone the final.

Who would England play in the Rugby World Cup quarter finals?
England are expected to make it out of Pool D, but so much depends on the opening match against Argentina. If England were to come second in Pool D, they would face the winner of Pool C, which contains two of their most bitter rivals in Australia and Wales.
The likeliest winner - according to the betting odds - is Australia, now coached by former England supremo Eddie Jones, who would love nothing more than to get one over on his old employers.
They have a young and raw squad, but given his record at World Cups it would be no surprise to see Jones’ side mixing it in the latter stages.
England Route to Rugby World Cup Final
One thing in England’s favour is that they find themselves on the right side of the draw. Should they win their pool they are likely to face Wales or Fiji – and while they have tasted defeat against both of those sides in the warm-ups, they would still head into that game knowing they can beat those sides.
As we mentioned, should they progress from Pool D as runners up then a meeting with Australia is the likeliest outcome in the quarter-finals.
A quarter-final win would see a semi-final match up with one of the sides from Pool A or Pool B – and that’s where things will become much more challenging. The five best sides in the world on paper sit on that side of the draw.
Should they make the semi-final it will be considered a success given everything that has gone on. And if they do make it there who knows what will happen.
According to the betting odds, this is England’s likeliest route to the 2023 Rugby World Cup final as Pool D runners up:
- Quarter Final vs Australia
- Semi Final vs France
And here is the likeliest route should England emerge as winners from Pool D:
- Quarter Final vs Wales
- Semi Final vs New Zealand
