Johanna Konta to win the Australian Open?

Johanna Konta stunned world number one Caroline Wozniacki to reach the fourth round and has now shortened to 11/2 to win outright.

Johanna Konta has emerged as a real contender for the Australian Open crown following her 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 win over Wozniacki.

It was the Briton's eighth successive victory and punters are beginning to consider the likelihood of her winning the first major of the year a real possibility.

Following her Sydney International triumph, Konta was cut to 20/1 to win before the Australian Open began in Melbourne, and now the 25-year-old is as short as 11/2 with William Hill.

Konta will take on Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round where a win could set up a potential quarter-final match with six-time champion Serena Williams.

Virginia Wade was the last British woman to win a grand slam when she won Wimbledon back in 1977. She was also the last British woman to reach the Australian Open final, in 1972, so it would be a special achievement for Konta to make the final in itself let alone win it.

Wade won the Sports Personality of the Year the same year she won Wimbledon, and it is hard to argue against Konta going on to do the same if she wins the Australian Open.

It seems punters are having the same thought process, she has gone from 50/1 into 12/1 with BoyleSports in just a day.
