The British number one was as short as 1/500 in-play after taking the opening set 6-1
Britain’s Joanna Konta suffered a shock first round exit at the hands of world number 109 Su-Wei Hsieh.
Konta, ranked 8th in the world, lost in three sets despite taking the first set 6-1. The defeat meant the 26 year-old continued her record of failing to win a match in the main draw of the French Open, suffering first round exits in each of the last three seasons.
It all started so well for the Brit as she eased through the first set to take what looked a commanding lead. Indeed, bookers had her as short as 1/500 in-play as she looked certain to end her French Open hoodoo.
However, Hsieh from Chinese Tapei fought back to level the match, taking the tie-break 7-2 before taking the 3rd set 6-4 to seal a huge upset. The 31 year-old, better known for her doubles exploits, with 19 titles in her career to date compared to just 2 singles wins, produced one of the best performances of her career to progress to the second round despite hitting a high of 40/1 in-play.
Konta will now move on to the grass courts as she bids to improve on her Wimbledon record that has seen her win just one match in her last five visits to the all England club. Despite this dismal record, she is as short as 7/1 with some firms to win the tournament.
