The French Open winner dominates the betting to repeat her Grand Slam success at SW19.
The Women’s French Open had a rather unlikely winner yesterday, as the unseeded Jelena Ostapenko defeated world number 3 Simona Halep in straight sets at Roland Garros. It was Ostapenko’s first title of any kind and she became the first unseeded player to win the French Open since 1933.
The young Latvian – who turned 20 years old on the day of her semi-final – played with fearlessness and freedom throughout the tournament, and defied odds of 150/1 to take the crown. Not many backed her at that price, although we did see one extremely shrewd Oddschecker user scoop a five figure payout on her victory.
Not just the win, but the manner of her wins, has made punters take note. Ostapenko hit 54 winners in the final, and boasts an average forehand speed that is faster than Andy Murray’s. In the last 24 hours, 67% of all bets through Oddschecker on Women’s Wimbledon have been on the 20-year-old. Bookies have also taken heed, slashing her odds from 100/1 to 16/1 win a second consecutive Grand Slam next month.
