Oddschecker has seen a surge of bet in the best actor marketing following the big film festivals.
The Venice and Toronto film festivals are out of the way and even though we’re still some way from the big night, bettors believe there’s only one man for the best actor award ath the 2018 Oscars. Garry Oldman has received stellar reviews following his portrayal as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour and his performance is now being backed to land him one of the most prestigious honours in acting.
In the month to date, Oldman has received a massive 83.67% of bets to win the award for Best Actor and is the bookmaker’s favourite to collect the statue at 2/1, odds that imply a 33.3% chance of success. One plucky punter was so impressed by Oldman’s performance they wagered just under £300 on him collecting the accolade.
Other actors in the market include, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal and even Adam Sandler.
Even though the large majority think it’s a done deal, punters have been wrong before. Only last year, in the month leading up to the Academy Awards 43% of bets were on Denzel Washington to take home the award. However, Casey Affleck stole the show, thanks to his role in Manchester by the Sea.
Oddschecker spokesman, George Elek “The Oscars are a long-way off on the horizon but those who have seen Gary Oldman's turn in Darkest Hour have already seen enough. The actor, who played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series, is the latest of a number of men who have taken on the role of Winston Churchill, but seems to have carried it off with unparalleled success.”
