McGee the second best-backed celebrity after the first week of dancing on the hit BBC show
It’s a different kind of stage that Debbie McGee is on these days but if bookies and bettors are anything to go by then the former Magician’s Assistant is taking to the dancefloor like a duck to water!
McGee has followed in the footsteps of her late husband Paul Daniels by signing up for Strictly and will hope to go better than Daniels’ week two elimination, and the early signs are good. McGee scored 30 points after performing a Paso Doble with partner Giovanni Pernice and bettors were quick to react on what they saw.
Over the last week, McGee has been the second best-backed celebrity and since the show went to air last night, she has received 20% of all bets. This time last week you could have got 22/1 on the 58-year old winning the competition, but her odds have dropped all the way down to 7/1, making her third favourite.
The current favourite however remains Aston Merrygold, who top scored in week one and is now 11/4 to win. He remains the best-backed celebrity, with 35% of bets going on the former JLS singer since last night’s show.
The next elimination market looks to be between Brian Conley and Simon Rimmer. Both celebrities were in the bottom three scores and have the same odds at 5/2 to be the first person to leave the 2017 series. Conley has been the pick with bettors, with a huge 34% of bets being placed on the Actor since the show aired.
Oddschecker Spokeman George Elek: “There is always one celebrity a year in Strictly that surprises the public and receives a rush of support and this year it looks like it will be Debbie McGee. Not many people gave her a chance when the line-up was revealed, but punters who did back her at 22/1 might just have got themselves some value.”
