Oddschecker punters piled in on Alexandra Burke following the former X Factor winner’s storming semi-final performance. Registering scores of 39 and 40 for her two dances, she wowed the judges on her way to topping the leaderboard, nine points clear of Joe McFadden and Debbie McGee in second.
It was the second time in two weeks Burke had top-scored but this time she avoided the dreaded dance-off for a third straight week to progress to the final and Oddschecker users were quick to snap up the 9/1 on offer pre-show. Her dominate performance led to bookies cutting her odds back into a best price 6/1, still much larger than the 7/4 on offer just under a month ago.
In total, 33.98% of all bets since the start of Saturday’s show have been on Burke, well clear of current odds-on favourite McFadden with 25.7%. The Scot’s odds shortened further on Sunday as it was revealed he had avoided the bottom two, meaning he was the only remaining contestant to have not featured in the dreaded dance-off this series. 11/10 before the weekend, he’s now odds-on across the board and best price 4/6 to lift the Glitter Ball trophy this weekend.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “It’s certainly been a rollercoaster of emotions for Alexandra Burke on this year’s Strictly. Regularly towards the top of the leaderboard, she has received more tens from the judges than any of her rivals and was at one point a very short-price favourite. Despite this, she’s not managed to capture the support of the UK public and her odds had drifted out to as big as 10/1 following back-to-back dance-offs. Her semi-final showing confirmed she’s probably the best dancer in the competition but unfortunately for her and her supporters, Saturday’s winner will be determined by a public vote.”
