Before beating Liverpool Craig Shakespeare accounted for 9% of bets in the next manager market but since the final whistle that figure has risen to 54%.
Monday Night Football sprung a surprise last night as a reenergised Leicester side tore Liverpool apart at the King Power stadium. In what was Craig Shakespeare’s one and potentially only game to stake his claim for the role on a permanent basis, he watched his side run out 3-1 winners, with two goals and a man of the match performance from the previously lacklustre Jamie Vardy.
Interestingly, before last night’s game Shakespeare accounted for just 9% of all bets in the ‘next Leicester manager’ market with Nigel Pearson the odds-on favourite following heavy backing. However, since his impressive audition on Monday night, 54% of all bets on the market have been placed on Shakespeare. This significant backing has seen his odds move from as long as 20/1 yesterday to best price 17/10 favourite.
Following the inhumane sacking of title-winning manager and cult hero Claudio Ranieri, a variety names have been linked to the Leicester job. Former Foxes player Roberto Mancini was in the frame initially but ruled himself out of the running early on. The bookies believe it to be a four-horse race now with Guus Hiddink (best price 6/1), Nigel Pearson (8/1) and Roy Hodgson (12/1) all very short in places.
