Euro 2020 Prediction: England Win & Under 3.5 Goals

‘Solid if unspectacular’ would be a good way of describing England so far this summer. Gareth Southgate has opted to play a low margin game, his side haven’t created a great deal of chances but also have limited their opposition to minimal high quality efforts too. It’s a risky game but it’s proven to be one worth going with given the quality of the forward players he has to make the telling difference.

One wonders whether Southgate will rotate a few here after most have played 4 games so far, the likes of Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have been used sparingly, expect them to feature at some point in Rome. Many will be keen on England looking to go full throttle early doors to try get a lead to sit back on and allow substitutions to be made, however it’s not really in the managers’ modus operandi to go that way.

Ukraine exuded plenty of energy, both physically and emotionally, in their 120th minute min against Sweden in Glasgow on Tuesday night. From around the hour mark both sides were tiring, going down with injuries and cramp and that’s far from ideal preparation given the lack of depth in their squad. To be able to go again will be a monumental task for the Yellow-Blue, but Andriy Shevchenko has made them a competitive nation on the elite stage.

The Three Lions have that depth to be able to switch things up, play different formations and they are therefore rightful favourites, but boosting the short quotes about England to win to a more palatable 19/20 by adding under 3.5 goals into the mix looks a canny way of squeezing out extra value. Defensively they are yet to be breached and don’t expect Southgate to go gung-ho when rest and recuperation will be on his mind should they take a lead here.
