New boss Vincent Kompany has overseen wholesale changes to the Burnley squad with no fewer than eight new faces added to the playing staff. 

It remains to be seen how well they will integrate from the get-go, but you can guarantee the team will start in their manager’s personality and show 100% commitment from the start.

Tonight’s hosts, meanwhile, lost the likes of Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo this summer but retain more than enough quality to be a threat and score past a side still getting to know each other. Particularly as Kompany maintained an attacking style when he was manager of Anderlecht.

You’ll perhaps be surprised to learn that Burnley were seventh in the yellow cards table last season, collecting 68 across their 38 matches. However, don’t expect the defensive ‘bite’ associated with the Clarets under Sean Dyche to dissipate under legendary defender Kompany. Josh Brownhill is expected to start in midfield having collected 10 yellow cards in the Premier League last season.

Huddersfield, themselves, fared pretty well in the Championship’s 2021/22 fair play league, collecting 73 yellows and no reds. But in a high pressure opener at the John Smith’s Stadium, for a team hoping to go one better than last season, you’d expect more than a single card for them too.

In 38 Premier League games last season, Burnley averaged 4.84 corners per match and conceded more than any other team in the league (2.55 at an average of 6.71). 

We might see a different approach from them under Kompany, but a ‘safety first’ approach to defending their box has traditionally made them likely to concede a lot of corners. Last season, Huddersfield averaged 4.2 corners gained and 4.7 given up over their 46 matches.
