Burnley to beat Shrewsbury

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley side travel to League One side Shrewsbury. The Clarets have had a below average start to the season and haven’t won since the first game of the season, where they beat Huddersfield 1-0. They also threw away a 3-1 lead against Blackpool to draw at home last weekend, and they currently sit in 16th in the Championship table.

Shrewsbury are in a similar position to Burnley in League One, only winning once this season from five games. That means the Shrews have only one win in 11 games going back to last season. Steve Cotterill’s side lost 3-0 at home to league leaders Ipswich on Saturday.

Burnley played Shrewsbury in a pre-season game in mid-July, which saw the Clarets run out 3-1 winners. With the quality in Vincent Kompany’s team, it looks likely a similar result will come on Tuesday.

Portsmouth to beat Newport

Portsmouth head to South Wales to play Newport with both teams picking up wins last weekend. Pompey are unbeaten in their first five games, winning their last three, in League One and currently sit in third place. They saw off Bristol Rovers last weekend with a 3-1 win at Fratton Park.

Newport County have struggled this season, only winning one of their first five in League Two. That win came against Tranmere last weekend, with County coming out 2-1 winners despite going a goal behind. They will need some of that resilience against Portsmouth, who were winners the last time they played each other in 2017.

Portsmouth looks the favourites to progress into the third round of the Carabao Cup, and we think they’ll do so at Rodney Parade on Tuesday.

Wolves to beat Preston

Preston face Premier League opposition in this game, as they travel to Molineux to face Wolves for a place in the next round of the competition. Bruno Lage’s side only have a point to show for themselves in the Premier League, despite the additions of Goncalo Guedes and Matheus Nunes from Valencia and Sporting CP respectively. Lage is likely to make a much-changed side for the game against Preston, as their focus will be on Newcastle next Sunday.

Preston are unbeaten in the Championship and are yet to concede a goal. With that record you would think they are in a much better position than 9th after five games, with Ryan Lowe’s side being involved in four 0-0 draws so far this season. Their only win so far in the campaign was away at Luton Town, with Brad Potts scoring the only goal of the game early on.

We think, despite the incoming changes for the Midlands side, that Wolves will have too much for Preston, and we think they’ll progress into the next round of the Carabao Cup.
