12:30 Sunday
Burnley vs Blackburn – Burnley
In one of the biggest Lancashire derbies to date, second-place Blackburn travel to Championship leaders Burnley, with both sides knowing a win would take them top going into the break for the World Cup.
Burnley’s good winning run was brought to an abrupt end at the hands of Sheffield United, as they battered the Clarets 5-2 in their last Championship game. That was their first loss since mid-August, which just shows why they have been at the top end of the table. Vincent Kompany’s side will be keen to get his team back on track with a win against local rivals Blackburn, so they remain at the summit of the table.
As for the visitors, they have won five of the last six in the league, and are the only side in the league yet to draw this season. Their eight losses is higher than anyone in the top half of the table, but so is their twelve wins. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side will be facing a big test at Turf Moor, but with how they’ve been doing this season, there is every chance they can notch a win here.
With Burnley at home infront of an expectant Turf Moor crowd, we think they will shake off their defeat to the Blades last weekend and take all three points to remain at the top of the table. A Burnley win is what we’re going for here.
14:00 Sunday
Brighton vs Aston Villa – Brighton
Brighton host new look Aston Villa, as Unai Emery takes charge of only his second Premier League match in charge of the Villans.
Roberto De Zerbi, after a run of five games without a win in the Premier League, he has managed his side to claim three wins from his last three in all competitions, with Arsenal becoming the latest team to go down to the Italian’s Seagulls. Brighton have found form at the best possible time, as their strong start to the campaign was looking to go off the rails. However, two wins in a row in the league has kept Brighton within the top six, above traditional top-end-of-the-table clubs Chelsea and Liverpool. A win at home against Aston Villa could have the hosts as high as 5th, which would be a remarkable position before the Premier League pauses for the World Cup.
As for the visitors, Villa won their last Premier League match against Manchester United in impressive style, winning 3-1. They did lose 4-2 to the Red Devils in the midweek League Cup round, but last weekend’s result will give Unai Emery every bit of confidence going into Sunday’s game. Aston Villa are still in the bottom half of the table, a position which should change following the arrival of the former Villarreal manager. Aston Villa have lost five of their seven away games in the league failing to score in their last two whilst conceding seven in the process.
While Unai Emery has brought fresh confidence and much-needed morale boost to Aston Villa, we still think the hosts will carry on their impressive run of form and with their fourth match in a row. Aston Villa’s away record is not something to be proud of, and Brighton have been flying this season and will want to end this stage of the season with a win in front of their home fans. We think a Brighton win is the play here.
16:30 Sunday
Fulham vs Manchester United – Manchester United
Fulham play Manchester United in the final Premier League fixture before the World Cup commences, with both sides probably relatively happy with their league positions. Fulham, who have become somewhat of a yo-yo club in recent years, are sitting in the top half of the table, after some impressive results for Marco Silva’s men. Aleksandar Mitrovic has been a key part of their successes but is ruled out for the arrival of Manchester United. Fulham were unlucky to lose against Manchester City last weekend after a late Erling Haaland penalty condemned them to just their first defeat in their last five.
As for the visitors, Manchester United come to Craven Cottage currently just outside the top four places. Following a dire start to the season, where the pressure was high on Erik Ten Hag, they have managed to turn it around to give themselves a strong position heading into the break for the World Cup. They will want to win here, and the absence of Fulham’s lethal Serbian will provide a big boost for them.
Whilst Fulham have been strong at home, we think the quality of Manchester United will be too much for them, and the lack of their top goalscorer this season certainly will make their task a lot tougher. Manchester United to win here is our prediction.
