Football Accumulator Tips: Wednesday’s 5/1 Carabao Cup Treble

Charlton Athletic vs Brighton – Brighton 

The first leg of our Wednesday treble sees Charlton Athletic host Premier League side Brighton. After a great start to the season, Graham Potter was drawn to the capital and many thought Brighton’s season would peter out. Roberto De Zerbi has taken charge and has done a great job to prove them wrong. They sit 7th in the league and look to have a real chance of qualifying for Europe this year. 

They visit a Charlton side who are hovering above the relegation zone in League One so they will see this as a chance to go far in the cup. With one side playing well in the Premier League and one struggling two divisions below, we can only see one winner here. 

Blackburn Rovers vs Nottingham Forest – Blackburn 

There is usually always a cup upset in this stage of the tournament and we can see it being between promotion chasing Blackburn and relegation bound Forest. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side will see this game as a chance to prove that they are good enough for the Premier League and to truly cement themselves in the running not just for promotion, but the Championship league title. 

They sit 3rd in the league, only five points off second and will be looking for a good second half of the season to close the gap. However, they were in poor form before the break with three losses in their last five so will need to start well to get back on track. A win against a struggling Forest side will do just that. 

Forest will be no pushovers, however. After a terrible start to the season, Steve Cooper’s men have clawed back some points after going unbeaten in their last five and picked up a morale boosting win over Crystal Palace just before the World Cup break. We think their focus will be on the league and they will rotate their squad, opening the door to Blackburn. A Rovers win for this one. 

Manchester United vs Burnley – Manchester United 

With the Cristiano Ronaldo saga at an end for Manchester United, Erik ten Hag will feel like they can kick on in the second half of the season and challenge for the Champions League positions. They welcome a Burnley side who are flying high at the top of the Championship and look likely for promotion. 

We think this one will be a good game with both teams playing free flowing attacking football. However, United have a much greater squad and although they will surely rotate some key players, they have quality in depth which we think will see them get this one over the line. Vincent Kompany’s men will put up a good fight, but ultimately the Red Devils will move a step closer to their sixth League Cup title.
