20:00 Wednesday
The hosts have come flying out of the blocks in 2023 after winning all of their competitive outings and scoring at least twice on each occasion. However, the Blues are looking like a side that are trying to work out how to play with each other. Can the visitors win their first game on the road since October?
Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea Stats
- The hosts have lost just once at home all season across all competitions and have scored at least twice in all six matches in 2023
- The visitors have failed to win any of their last eight road games across all competitions, losing five of them
- The hosts are averaging nearly seven corners per game and look good value to see more than Chelsea
Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea Prediction
Betting Tip: Dortmund win
Edin Terzic’s side have been nothing short of exceptional since the turn of the New Year and they’ll be full of confidence and believe that they can claim a victory in the first leg of this round of 16 tie and take an advantage to London when the two face off once again.
Chelsea were only able to secure yet another draw when they travelled to London rivals West Ham at the weekend. They probably should have won the game and a number of refereeing decisions seemed to go against them. However, the facts remain that they failed to win on the road yet again and the pressure is mounting on Graham Potter.
Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt said that his side cannot rest on their laurels and need to maintain the extremely high standard that they have set in 2023. In front of a loud yellow wall the hosts will be right up for this and I think they’re a great price to capitalise on an out of sorts Chelsea side in transition.
Avoiding defeat is paramount for the Blues but at 6/4, I’ll back the German outfit to draw first blood and claim victory.
Betting Tip: Dortmund most corners
Keeping on the theme of being pro-Dortmund, I like the chances of them seeing more corners than Chelsea at Signal Iduna Park.
In the Bundesliga this campaign, only Bayern Munich average more than Dortmund’s 6.78 per game. They operate down both flanks and the majority of their attacking play is down the sides of their opponents.
Visitors Chelsea are still missing a host of key players for this clash which isn’t ideal, they will also have to make do with defender Benoit Badiashile who has not been registered for their Champions League squad and will be unable to take part here. As such, Chelsea don’t look the strongest defensively and Dortmund will try to test them as often as they can.
Chelsea are conceding an average of five corners per away match in the Premier League and up against a Dortmund outfit with their tails up, they will need to soak up pressure.
With all that in mind, the 11/8 available for Edin terzic’s men to win more corners makes plenty of appeal.
