After achieving their first victory of 2023, Liverpool will travel to the toughest venue of the season hoping to become the first side to win here. But the Magpies are fighting to hang on to fourth place and they’ll feel confident of picking up a result in a packed St James' Park.
Newcastle vs Liverpool Stats:
- The hosts have suffered just one defeat across their last 23 competitive outings
- Liverpool have lost five of their last seven away outings
- Joelinton has committed a foul in all 19 of his 20 EPL appearances this season and two or more in 10 of those
Newcastle vs Liverpool Prediction:
Betting Tip: Newcastle draw no bet
The hosts are the surprise package this season and many neutrals are keeping an eye on them as here we are, in February, and the Magpies still occupy a place in the top four. They’ve become incredibly difficult to beat as evident by the fact they have lost just once across their least 23 competitive fixtures.
The same cannot be said for the visitors who sit ninth place in the league standings and have failed to claim victory in four of their last five league outings. That win did come last time out against Everton in the Merseyside Derby but all that result does is paper over the cracks and there is cause for concern for the Reds.
St. James Park has been a fortress for Eddie Howe’s men this season and they remain the only side yet to lose at home this term - a remarkable feat after 11 matches played here. Manchester City and Chelsea have both failed to win here this season and it seems unlikely that Liverpool, in the situation they are, will rock up and claim all three points.
If any side wins this one, I’d lean towards it being the home side but for a degree of safety, I’ll have a play on Newcastle draw no bet.
Betting Tip: Joelinton 2+ fouls committed
Joelinton has been revived under Eddie Howe and looks right at home in central midfield. He’s a force and his ability to carry the ball forward and make things happen has been a catalyst behind a lot of the great things they have done this term.
However, despite his attacking contributions this season, he is a fiery character and also likes to get involved in the defensive side of things. He’s made tackles in 17 of his 20 league appearances but he can often be guilty of being a bit overzealous and giving away cheap free kicks.
That’s what I think could happen here as Newcastle United look to swarm Liverpool on home turf and make life difficult for them. Applying constant pressure will be paramount for the hosts and he could have too much energy for the visitors' ageing midfield.
He’s priced up extremely short for two or more tackles on various sites, but Unibet have offered a generous 7/5 for the same pick and I'll be getting on early.
