20:00 Wednesday
A much-needed win for West Ham saw them rise to 14th in the table, but it shows how tight the bottom of the table is when you consider they’re still just a point away from the relegation zone. Meanwhile Newcastle are looking to strengthen their grip on a place in the top four and we should be in for a fierce contest on Wednesday night.
West Ham United vs Newcastle United Stats
- Both teams have scored in six of the previous seven meetings between these two sides
- West Ham have scored first in five of their last seven outings but have not kept a clean sheet in eight consecutive meetings with the Magpies
- Lucas Paqueta registered 10 tackles against Southampton and has made three or more in five of the 10 league matches he has started at home
West Ham United vs Newcastle United Prediction:
Betting Tip: Both teams to score
West Ham secured a crucial 1-0 victory at home to rock bottom Southampton last time out which gave them three vital points as they look to pull clear of the relegation zone. However, they are still just a single point above 18th place Leeds and now welcome Champions League chasing Newcastle United to Elland Road.
The visitors were well worth their win over Manchester United and it means that after 27 games played, Eddie Howe’s side have lost on just three occasions which is the joint fewest in the division. The Magpies are incredibly tough to beat and they’ll be full of confidence that they can return home with all three points.
Entertainment is often provided when these two outfits face one another with both teams contributing to the score count in six of the last seven meetings overall. West Ham are a club that at minimum needs to be playing Premier League football and that will be the primary objective.
Newcastle have shipped the opening goal in five of their last seven and they may concede here, but given their quality I would be amazed if they were not able to breach this West Ham backline and I fancy both teams to score.
Betting Tip: Lucas Paqueta 3+ tackles
I’ve been impressed by the former Lyon midfielder this season and he was a vital part of why West Ham were able to clinch a win against the Saints last time out. He registered a ridiculous 10 tackles in that clash and posting a high tackle count has been a fairly common theme for the Brazilian on home soil this term.
In the 10 Premier League matches he has started at the London Stadium this term, he has made three or more tackles in exactly half of those games. As we approach the crunch period of the season, games tend to be played with a much higher intensity given there is so much on the line and he will once again be tasked with trying to win the midfield battle.
Without Casemiro, Manchester United struggled to deal with Newcastle and I feel Paqueta is just as important to West Ham, even if often playing in a different role. The 7/4 available on him making three or more tackles makes plenty of appeal when you consider Newcastle are likely going to be on top for the majority of the match.
