England look set for a comprehensive victory in their penultimate group match against Malta but complacency shouldn’t be an issue with the fierce competition for places in the England ranks. The visitors are yet to pick up a point and that shouldn’t change when they take the field at Wembley.
England vs Malta Stats
- England have scored 12 goals across their three home qualifying matches thus far.
- The Three Lions have played eight matches against sides have been priced at 40/1 or greater on the 1x2 market since the start of 2016. Those matches have seen them score an average of 5.13 goals per game without conceding a single goal.
- Malta’s only competitive away win in their last 10 attempts was against San Marino.
England vs Malta Prediction
This one is a David vs Goliath affair in every sense. England are amongst the favourites for next summer's European Championships and their squad is stacked with world-class talent. Southgate has some players ruled out with injuries but whatever team he names will have enough to carve through Malta like a hot knife through butter.
Harry Kane, England’s captain and talismanic striker, is in red-hot form. He has scored 17 goals in the Bundesliga already and looks set to eclipse the record set by Robert Lewandowski. Kane is looking to add trophies to a glittering goalscoring record and accomplishing that feat with England would be icing on the cake.
England are notoriously ruthless in qualifying. They haven’t lost a European Championship qualifier since 2007. Malta are the next side in the firing line and it is almost inconceivable that they will come away with anything other than a heavy defeat here.
Malta will need to cling on for dear life in this one. They failed to muster a single shot or win a corner in the last head-to-head. England had 16 shots in that encounter and were never troubled as they coasted to a 4-0 win.
Michel Marcolini’s side will be set up to defend so England will have plenty of attempts. Malta’s opponents are averaging 16.14 shots per game; well above the average of 11.82 shots for a team in the match.
With the 1x2 market so one-sided, our focus has to be on other markets. I’m backing Harry Kane to score at least two goals here.
Harry Kane has hit the ground running in Germany and is earning the plaudits he deserves. His goal-scoring prowess makes him a formidable foe and he will get a boatload of chances here. He scored twice in England’s recent win over Italy.
The Bayern Munich striker has also scored 10 goals in his last four appearances for the club with this bet landing in all four. Kane scored once and played just 60 minutes in the last meeting with Malta. However, he squandered a great opportunity to grab a brace. This match should play out in a similar manner and he will want to fill his boots and extend his record as England’s all-time top scorer.
Kane is averaging 4.5 shots per game in the German top flight with 2.4 of those finding the target. He gets plenty of opportunities in one of Europe’s major leagues so expect the chances to flow against the Maltese.
Tip: Harry Kane to score 2 or more @ 6/4 Unibet
