20:00 Wednesday

Wednesday night’s Europa League final takes place in Dublin with Atalanta taking on Bayer Leverkusen in a potentially exciting and enthralling Aviva Stadium showdown.

Atalanta are chasing only their second-ever piece of major silverware. The Bergamo boys were beaten by Juventus in the Coppa Italia final last week yet bounced back to secure Champions League qualification via a fifth-place finish in Serie A despite Gian Piero Gasperini resting and rotated his squad for Saturday’s 2-0 success at Lecce.

La Dea will be missing one of their key cogs in midfield, however. Dutch destroyer Marten de Roon will need to be replaced in defensive midfield though there is hope that wing back Sead Kolasinac will recover in time to make the squad for the trip to Ireland.

Bayer Leverkusen crowned their maiden Bundesliga crown with a 2-1 triumph over Augsburg at the weekend, completing their league campaign unbeaten (W28-D6-L0). Die Werkself became the first-ever German side to complete a full season without defeat and are enjoying an extraordinary European record-extending 51 games without loss.

Unsurprisingly, Leverkusen are the only unbeaten team across Europe’s top five leagues per UEFA coefficient in 2023/24 (W42-D9-L0), failing to score just once, and Xabi Alonso’s outfit will make the trip with an expected full squad at his disposal.

Below you can find the reasoning behind each part of the bet from full time professional punter Mark O’Haire.

Over 1 Goal

It’s a mouthwatering match-up as two of the most aesthetically pleasing and attack-minded sides in their respective leagues go head-to-head. The two teams tend to be proactive in their approach and are renowned for their goalscoring ability; collectively, the duo have failed to score in just eight of their combined contests across all competitions this term.

In Europa League encounters, the pair have struck multiple goals in 17 of 22 tussles, firing a solitary blank en-route to the final. The Over 1.5 Goals angle banked in 20 of those 22 UEL contests, with the same selection providing profit in 63 of their respective 70 league showdowns this season.

Over 7.5 Atalanta Shots

The market has made Bayer Leverkusen odds-on favourites to secure top honours in regulation time. Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten history-makers deserve enormous credit and respect, but don’t dismiss Atalanta – the Bergamo club are well capable of playing their part in an enjoyable shootout and carry plenty of final-third threat.

La Dea have covered the Over 7.5 Shots line in 17 of their past 19 matches, hitting 12+ shots in 10 of their previous 12 tussles. In fact, Atalanta have managed at least seven shots across all bar two games in all competitions this season, averaging 13.16 attempts in the Europa League alone.

Florian Wirtz to Score or Assist

Florian Wirtz was named the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season after a remarkable campaign that saw him power Bayer Leverkusen’s push for their historic maiden Bundesliga title.

Wirtz’s stellar season saw him voted Player of the Month on three occasions, racking up 11 goals and 11 assists domestically.

The 21-year-old has also made eight goal contributions (goals and assists) in the Europa League, meaning Germany’s brightest young talent has scored or assisted a goal every 100 minutes in the Bundesliga and Europa League.

Over 2.5 Offsides

The front-foot nature of the two teams has led to a high number of offsides. Leverkusen’s last 10 matches across all competitions have seen Die Werkself rack up 24 offside flags, with five of their most recent eight opponents also being flagged at least twice.

Meanwhile, Atalanta have been caught offside in 22 of their past 25 dates with their opposition following suit in 17 of 20 encounters. The Over 2.5 Offsides line therefore should come under plenty of pressure considering the frequency of flags in the two teams tussles.
